It’s actually funny when I read that “Senna could have out-driven Prost riding a bicycle” when he scored less points than Prost in both seasons when they were team mates and in this championship decider he was behind the whole race. They were both legends and in different ways they were probably the best drivers aver seen on a race track. They both deserve respect.
Concerning this very race: Senna didn’t have any other way to try to win but Prost had the right to defend his position, and he said before the start “no more open doors” as he had to do before to avoid a crash like that.
Prost was ahead so he had the right to choose his line, that was the only “rule” at the time. He was ahead in 1989. And he was ahead in 1990 too.

Ok, we all know Prost turned in early and Senna got his revenge the next year. As a kid I always believed Prost did nothing wrong here but you can clearly see he turns in on him way early. This is his revenge for Imola ’89 i guess

Senna once said Jackie Stewart: ”If you do not take advantage of the loopholes that let other drivers in the race, you’re not an F-1 driver.” Prost clearly drove his car up on Senna, missing two meters to the tangency of the curve. Senna tookProst left the gap that way and put the car next to him. And Prost, knowing that if you took the race Senna would be champion, drove his car up. Alessandrosurpassed Ayrton Nanini the same way they tried to overtake the French, so cleanand clear, and nothing happened. Senna won the race and was disqualified byJean Marie ballestre DISQUALIFIED (French). C’est la vie …

It’s a game of chicken which Senna played all the time. He’ll go on a collision course, whether defending or attacking a corner. He makes a collision imminent, and it is up to the other driver to back off or take it. Evidenced by many fights with Mansell, Piquet, even Schumacher. Prost simply refused to play the game of chicken anymore. Senna was on the inside, but he clearly should have expected the guy in front of him to turn, since he’d done exactly that so many times to other people right? So he should’ve backed off to avoid an imminent collision but did not. So it is really Senna’s fault.

Hunt is a fool. Senna could have out-driven Prost riding a bicycle. The back-door dealing that stripped Senna of the World Championship and the petulance displayed by Prost is one of the most embarrassing moments in sporting history.

To say that Prost was right here is pretty much saying that Schumacher was right when he deliberately crashed into Villeneuve (although that was a tad worse because Schumacher steered away, and then into to Villeneuve).

You are an “arrogant idiot” and Prost is 4 times world champion (and normally 5 times ’cause in 88 he has got more points that Senna if the stupid rule to conserv only the 11 best result in the season was not in the rules of championship at this moment)…And just watch more the video of the crash in 89: Senna is not at the same level of Prost when Prost turns into the corner.Prost hasn’t got the choice my friends…And it’s really funny to read a thing like “Prost can’t accept when he’s beat”..Really funny when you think about all the career of Prost …Really funny when you think about what’s Senna did in ’90, in the same circuit just after the start in 250 kmph !! with 24 other drivers just behind them! Senna was very dangerous at this moment isn’t it? (for Prost, for the other drivers and especially for himself!!) just to have a “revenge” and win the championship…I agree with Prost: it was disgusting and more! And Balestre didn’t make a decision against Senna after japanese gp 1990, so the opinion that “he’s french he’s for Prost” etc etc…It’s a good joke! And for your information in 89 Senna needed to win the 2 last races to be world champion: in suzuka and adelaide. In suzuka we knows what’s happened, and in adelaide he crashed with Brundle…So the title was for Prost anyway. Not the same thing in 1990 when Senna crashed with Prost…Anyway Prost and Senna were the 2 best drivers in the 80 and 90.

Although I agree Senna should have been allowed to keep the points and I do prefer him that doesn’t matter, Prost was in front and the corner was his as was said in the rules. I agree he played dirty and deliberately turned in on Ayrton but if that is allowed in the rules unfortunately he did nothing wrong.

I saw nothing wrong with Senna’s move. What I did see was a man knowing full well that if the other guy crashes you are crowned World Champ. Once a driver’s job is to keep the other guy from winning (at all costs) as opposed to getting the best possible finish; the racing is over.
liam
its clear that prost turns into senna senna had the racing line and prost is just an arrogant idiot who cant accept when hes beat.

Utterly ridiculous for Hunt to suggest that Prost “had ever right” to close the door on Senna. Prost is not turning for the apex of the corner .. instead it is very clear that he is turning his car with the intent to make contact with Senna. What is truly pathetic is that in 1990 when Senna took him off (after being screwed yet again by Balestre) Prost said Senna’s tactics were “disgusting”. I imagine there are not many mirrors in the Prost household.
Hunt doesn’t know what argument to use to disqualify Senna. I know one that could disqualify Prost though: Look how Prost expect the impact on Senna’s car. It was on purpose.

Don’t you dare to say about them. They are as good, as fierce and as fine as they can be. Its pretty easy to say laying in your couch and talk about their decision, while they have to make these difficult situations handled running 250 kmph, in fraction of a second..
They are the racing breed, a breed live to race, breath to race and nothing else. You probably have never ever been faster in your life more than 100mph, so go on blabbering about how these guys are, because that is the only thing you can
Ernest Sousa
Compared to what Hamilton or Webber do to their aversaries today, this is very innocent actually.

As for James Hunt…….well………..say no more really……..

Senna was in the right in passing Prost, and legally got outside assistance…… but lets not forget that Prost and Balestre are both Frenchmen.
Pedro Merola
This was they first crash, so was prost who started…
Stef Mertens
maybe Senna had to wait another lap. He really tries to outbrake Prost from to far behid. but Prost had to let Senna pass. Probably Senna would have slid past the chicane and Prost would have got a chance to turn in behind the Brazilian.
He just did what Senna did a year later (as revenge): take the otherone out and get the worldchampionship.
Bedran
Hunt realised that he talked out of his ass, and tried to make an excuse for the rest of the race. He wasn’t comenting, he was chearing for Prost.
Vitor
Forever Senna the one!
Zé Afonso
Se Prost tivesse feito igual a Nanini, não teriam batido. Não falo inglês, mas se James Hunt está condenando Ayrton, ele deve procurar outra profissão que não seja comentarista de F1.
